Saints take on Barons in crucial matchup
Arroyo Seco and Academy will face off with potential playoff implications.
PASADENA, CA — After surrendering a late lead Sunday to snap their three-game winning streak, the Arroyo Seco Saints (10-16) will look to bounce back in a pivotal matchup against the Academy Barons (14-11) on Tuesday.
With just 10 games left in the regular season, the Saints find themselves 4.5 games behind the Barons for the final wild card spot in the CCL South. A win today would inch Arroyo Seco closer to that elusive playoff berth, while a loss would make the road ahead much more difficult.
The Saints and Barons have met four times so far, with both squads sitting at 2-2 in the season series. In their latest matchup on July 1, Arroyo Seco erased an early deficit thanks to two-RBI nights from Evan Reiter (Santa Ana College) and Brandon Nguyen (Undecided), winning 6-5.
The Saints will turn to Edwin Segovia (Azusa Pacific University) on the mound to keep their streak of strong starts alive. After struggling for much of the season, the starting pitching has been stellar in the second half, combining for a 3.15 ERA across 20 innings in Arroyo Seco's last four games.
Segovia has been one of the Saints' top options out of the rotation, with a 4.26 ERA that ranks second among the team's starters. Arroyo Seco has won all four of his starts — most recently, against the Walnut Creek Crawdads (19-8) on July 8, when Segovia allowed just two earned runs in five innings.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. A live broadcast of the game will be available on the Saints' YouTube channel.
