SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA- Nearly 200 miles north of Pasadena, the Arroyo Seco Saints split their weekend series against the San Luis Obispo Blues.

After winning a thrilling 4-2 game on Saturday, the Saints dropped Sunday’s game 3-0.

The Saints’ first baseman, Ryan Scott (Incarnate Word), had another great game on the plate. After struggling to start the summer, Scott reached base safely multiple times on Saturday, including the go-ahead hit. Scott built off that game with another strong performance at the plate, going 1-1 with two walks and a hit by pitch.

Even though Scott reached base in all four plate appearances, his teammates failed to bring him home, as the Saints were shut out for the first time this season.

The Blues loaded the bases in the first inning, but Saints starter Spencer Seid (UC San Diego) got out of the inning without any damage.

San Luis Obispo put a crooked number on Seid in the second inning as it recorded all three of its runs on four hits. After that, San Luis Obispo didn’t record a hit for the rest of the game as Seid pitched a perfect third inning in his final inning of the game, while Eli Hernandez (Emporia State) and Andrew Wright (Cal State Fullerton) combined for five hitless innings. The only baserunner in that span reached on a fielding error.

Although the bullpen put up arguably their most dominant performance of the season, the offense failed to get the big hit they’ve gotten so many times this year as the Saints went 0-12 with runners in scoring position.

The Saints got two men on with one out in the fourth inning after Scott was hit by a pitch and designated hitter Josh Livingston (Wichita State) drew a walk, but they were unable to score after the next two hitters were retired in order.

The same thing happened the following inning, with two Saints reaching base with one out but not being able to score.

Arroyo Seco had their best chance to score in the top of the eighth as second baseman Cam Conley (Pepperdine), right fielder Easton Elliot (portal) and Scott all reached base to start the inning but didn’t score as the next three hitters all got set down in order.

The Saints didn’t threaten in the ninth and fell 3-0 to drop to 12-9.

The Saints will return home on Tuesday to take on the MLB Academy Barons. For the sixth time this season, they are 3-2 against them, with Trajan Lee (Trinity) getting the start.
